Princeton to cap on-campus drinking

PRINCETON BOROUGH -- Boozing the Princeton University campus is about to become a whole lot harder -- at least, that's the hope of school officials.

In the aftermath of the tragedy at Rider University, where a freshman died earlier this year after a night of binge drinking in a hazing-related incident, several colleges in Mercer County have adopted tougher policies against on-campus drinking. Princeton University is no exception.

Students walking yesterday among the university's c Gothic revival and ivy-covered dormitories described Princeton as one of the more social Ivy League institutions, where drinking on-campus is a norm on weekends and hard liquor is plentiful.

"Alcohol is bigger here than people think. On the weekends, the dorms become social centers for drinking and winding down from school stressors," said sophomore Xinyi Duan, who resides in the Forbes College dormitory.

Lean plate club: News: In conflict or in concert?

If you're feeling a little whiplash from recent nutritional news, no wonder.First, 21 respected, international scientists report that excess pounds, inactivity and overconsumption of certain foods, including red meat and alcohol, increase cancer risk. Then, a few days later, scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that being overweight does not raise the risk of dying prematurely from either heart disease or -- you guessed it -- cancer. At first glance, the two reports seem contradictory. But dig a little deeper and there's some striking consistency that can help clear the nutritional fog.None of the recent findings "change any current recommendations" for food or activity, notes Katherine Flegal, lead author of the CDC study. "You still want to eat right, get some activity and don't smoke.

Rehab Centers Take Issue with Media's Portrayal of Revolving Door Celebrities

Celebrities are doing it -- some successful, some not. Rehab success is due to attitude, programs offered and patience. The media make drug rehab appear to be unsuccessful as it relates to popular entertainment icons. This negatively effects the likelihood of potential patients entering into programs.

North Palm Beach, Florida (PRWEB) October 22, 2007 -- The recent mischaracterization of Drug Rehab Centers as revolving door facilities prompts Florida treatment center CARE FLORIDA to distance itself from the rock-star agenda. Many recovery centers, when attended devotedly and vigilantly, can help with every kind of addiction problem out there. From drug and alcohol detox to help with gambling and eating disorders, these centers have programs to help with any addiction. However, the media make drug rehab appear to be unsuccessful as it relates to popular entertainment icons.

DUI checkpoint to give away turkeys Tuesday

Sobriety checkpoints play an important role during the holiday season in preventing drug- and alcohol-related accidents.

But a checkpoint scheduled for Tuesday in Salinas at an undisclosed location will be a little different. This time, the Salinas Police Department and the Safe Teens Empowerment Project in Salinas (STEPS), a program of Sun Street Centers, are collaborating to give away turkeys.

They ditched hooch for health

Many stories on rehabilitation focus on an alcoholic's downward spiral before finding new life in sobriety. But with that new life comes a quandary — how to fill time once occupied with a bottle with time dedicated to health.

"You have to have something to replace that time, said Lawrence Houston, 48, who once abused alcohol and drugs but today lives clean and sober in suburban Lancaster. "Idle time is the devil's workshop!"

"Go for a walk," agreed Dr. David Hill, a Millersville University professor of psychology, who has also served as an addictions consultant for area treatment centers. "Go to the gym; go to something self-enhancing."

Like Houston, others who have battled addiction have taken up that mantra. They work out, golf, swim, coach, take up yoga, read, meditate and/or pray.

One cant help but notice that the holidays are soon approaching. With the holidays, come family, friends, holiday cheer and those wondrous scents of home-baked goods.

Cheers to you and me in the form of eggnog, wine and Bloody Marys can be a good thing in moderation, unless, of course, youre pregnant.

If a woman drinks alcohol during her pregnancy, her baby can be born with fetal alcohol syndrome. FAS is one of the most severe effects of drinking during pregnancy.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fetal alcohol syndrome is characterized by abnormal facial features, growth deficiencies and central nervous system problems.

Children with FAS can have problems with the heart, kidneys and bones. People with FAS might have problems with learning, memory, attention span, communication, vision, hearing or a combination of these.
