Are you addicted to your own emotional problems?

We all have addictions. We are addicted to our emotions, to drugs, to alcohol, food, sugar, work, exercise, sodas, gambling and so much more. People do not particularly like the word addiction, and you may want to argue this point with me, but most of us are experiencing or have experienced an addiction of some sort whether you want to admit it or not.

I will not be talking here about chemical imbalance, which can lead to addiction, nor am I talking about severe addictions to drugs and alcohol. Although there is a metaphysical response to severe addictions, there is not enough space or time here to address it.

An addiction is a thing we do too much of that causes an imbalance in other areas of our lives. Our search for well-being and the lack thereof can lead to addictions.

Autopsy: Cuffed woman strangled

A New York woman who died while in police custody during an airport layover was intoxicated and strangled to death, an autopsy report Friday said.

The Maricopa County medical examiner's report said that 45-year-old Carol Anne Gotbaum died from "asphyxia by hanging" in a police holding room at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Sept. 28.

The report also said Gotbaum was acutely intoxicated on alcohol and prescription drugs when she died. One expert said Gotbaum's blood alcohol level was three times Arizona's legal limit.

According to the toxicology report, Gotbaum's blood alcohol level was .24. In Arizona, the legal limit is .08, said Pima County's Chief Medical Examiner Bruce Parks.

Authorities have said that Gotbaum, who was handcuffed and shackled by a chain to a bench in the holding room, may have accidentally strangled herself with the chain.

De Soto schools consider drug tests for students

Joe Novak says today's teens are bold, bright risk-takers, and policies that used to steer kids away from drugs and alcohol just don't work anymore.

So the Mill Valley High School principal supports a De Soto School District proposal that could bring random drug testing to the Johnson County district.

If the policy is adopted, De Soto would join school districts in Oak Grove in Missouri and El Dorado near Wichita, among others, in conducting random drug tests of students who participate in extracurricular activities.

"It's one component, not the end-all and be-all of the program," said De Soto school board President Janine Gracy, who also is the director of the Regional Prevention Center of Johnson, Leavenworth and Miami counties.

"It may not have the effect that we want it to have on every student.

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes when the cameras are off? Watch

Hollywood star Christian Slater's addiction to drugs and alcohol left him so weak and frail he struggled to carry out simple everyday tasks.

The 'True Romance' actor's battle to kick his habits has been well-publicized as his drunken antics led to him being jailed in 1997 after being accused of assaulting his then girlfriend, Michelle Jonas, and several police officers.

But Slater is pleased to have finally got his life back on track.

He says, "I went through a period of real bad drug and alcohol abuse and there's no doubt that takes a certain toll on your body.

"You're wiped out, tired, less presentable in any situation. How can you present yourself in a positive way when you can't even stand up properly?"
