SPRINGFIELD - A New Hampshire man was sentenced to jail yesterday in a drunken driving case that left his victim with severe medical injuries and an uncertain future, according to testimony in Hampden Superior Court. Speaking to the judge, Assistant District Attorney James M. Forsyth lifted a cloth totebag with a large accordion folder bursting with papers and said it contained Paul Palatino's medical records since Oct. 14, 2006, when Richard P. Condon drove his Jeep head on into Palatino's car while heading the wrong way on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Brimfield. Palatino, of Palmer, who had been returning from a job when the crash happened at 2:45 a.m., stood beside Forsyth after asking the prosecutor to read his victim impact statement. Condon pleaded guilty to operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury.

SWEEPING new powers to strip criminals of their assets are needed to avoid mafia-style corruption taking root in Scotland, a newly retired police chief has warned. Graeme Pearson, who served his last day as director of the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA) yesterday, said current asset recovery legislation was "too restrictive" and insisted much tougher powers were needed to "isolate" organised crime and prevent it spreading further into legitimate businesses and spheres of public life. .

The awareness kicks off a holiday traffic initiative aimed at preventing alcohol and drug related motor vehicle accidents and fatalities. .
