New York to ban smoking in drug-treatment centers

ALBANY - For decades, addiction-treatment programs have honed in on drug and alcohol abuse and shrugged at patients' near-universal use of tobacco.

But faced with growing awareness about the power of nicotine addiction and that smoking kills more people than all other addictive drugs combined, New York officials have decided the state can no longer afford to ignore smoking.

"The entire field has struggled with the really incorrect notion that treating nicotine addiction would be really a hardship on the chemically addicted," said Karen Carpenter-Palumbo, commissioner of the state Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.

In July, New York will become the first state in the nation to ban smoking at all its chemical dependence prevention and treatment programs, including those that treat gambling addiction.

St. Joseph’s hosts Russian specialists

SARANAC LAKE St. Petersburg, Russias House of Hope on the Hill, is the countrys only free alcohol treatment center that uses the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous in a 28-day program.

The Center has served approximately 2,500 people from 110 cities across Russia as well as patients from a few of the former Soviet states.

To further strengthen their programs, three addiction specialists: Board member and well-known Russian artist Dmitri Shagin; Senior Counselor Sergei Agafonov; the Centers Director Dr. Svetlana Moseeva, and their translator, Alexander Alexandrov have spent 10 days studying St. Josephs Rehabilitation Centers recovery programs and business practices.

The group is particularly interested in the Family Services Session, which serves as an intervention technique to educate family members and the resident about the destructiveness of the disease.

Rehab Centers Take Issue with Media's Portrayal of Revolving Door Celebrities

Celebrities are doing it -- some successful, some not. Rehab success is due to attitude, programs offered and patience. The media make drug rehab appear to be unsuccessful as it relates to popular entertainment icons. This negatively effects the likelihood of potential patients entering into programs.

North Palm Beach, Florida (PRWEB) October 22, 2007 -- The recent mischaracterization of Drug Rehab Centers as revolving door facilities prompts Florida treatment center CARE FLORIDA to distance itself from the rock-star agenda. Many recovery centers, when attended devotedly and vigilantly, can help with every kind of addiction problem out there. From drug and alcohol detox to help with gambling and eating disorders, these centers have programs to help with any addiction. However, the media make drug rehab appear to be unsuccessful as it relates to popular entertainment icons.

Stop Illegal Prescription Drug Use

There are calls for the Ministry of Health to crack down on the illegal use of prescription drugs.

Capital and Coast's Chief Medical Officer, Dr Geoffrey Robinson says while New Zealand is in a unique position of having little street heroin, prescription drugs such as methadone and morphine have increased on the street market.

Speaking to the combined Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs (APSAD) and Cutting Edge Addiction Conference in Auckland today, he says the number of methadone patients has increased over the past 20 years from about 400 to 4000. .

Addiction programs to go smokeless

Will A Colon Cleanse Rid Me Of Toxins?

Today, more people are seeking alternative treatments that will help them feel better overall or improve their quality of life. Certainly, many product manufacturers have latched onto this potential market, offering an abundance of health-enhancing products and services on the Internet, in health food stores and alternative medicine settings.

An increasing number of patients are asking physicians about detoxification regimens — in particular colon cleansing. The colon cleanse, a practice unproved in medical literature, is based upon the premise that the body is under constant assault from pesticides, smog, sugar, artificial sweeteners, alcohol and other toxins that can remain in the colon for months or years.

Detoxification proponents contend this accumulation of toxins in the colon can lead to a variety of common medical ailments, including constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, severe gas and bloating, weight gain, chronic fatigue, acid reflux, parasites, stomach pain, diverticulitis and skin and hair problems.
