Residents Demand Help For Kids

Some Albany residents told the city's Common Council they want their city free from gangs and violence. They say city funding should be used to pay for community centers that might help young people steer clear of a life of violence. One 54-year-old man told how he was kicked and beaten by a group of ten teen-agers who he says only wanted to assault him - not rob him. He asked CBS 6 to not report his name because he's afraid someone will come to his home and put his family in danger. He wonders if the attack on Delaware Avenue on November 6 was part of a gang initiation. "The intensity and the hatred and violence was unbelievable. They were punching and kicking me with intense hatred and I don't even know these people. To me, this was a hate crime," he said. Some common council members agree community centers for young people are a good idea but others say that's just part of the solution.

Officials in Mini-Cassia school districts are taking a pro-active stance against the new antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that have cropped up in schools in other parts of the country.Cassia Joint School District Superintendent Gaylen Smyer said the district has already held a meeting between custodians and maintenance personnel to outline new protocol for wiping down desks and other surfaces routinely touched by students and staff."These are really new creatures on the block," Smyer said about the new strains of bacteria some have dubbed "superbugs."The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say staph infections usually occur among people in healthcare facilities or those who have weakened immune systems. But some new strains of the bacteria are merging into the general population and are known as community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA.

Homeless program given go-ahead

The Community Fairweather Lodge will be located on Grandview Road.

A new support program aimed at re-integrating homeless individuals into the community got the go-ahead Wednesday to set up in a residence on Grandview Road.

The Community Fairweather Lodge Program, a national organization that has more than 90 lodges, or residential centers, in 16 states, will be located in a house at 817 Grandview Road in front of the Regional Counseling Center.

After having been assured by program coordinators, working under a grant from the state and county, that the Fairweather Lodge was not "just a fancy name for a group home," the Oil City Zoning Hearing Board agreed that the operation would meet the zoning definition of "professional services." That would make the facility allowable in an area zoned C-1, or commercial, which applies to the Grandview site.

Q What has been your greatest accomplishment?

A My greatest accomplishment is becoming the person I am today through gaining experience while still maintaining the inherent goodness of my youth.

Nutrition can be key to winning

Sports dietitian maps out plan for Route 66 runners.

The morning of October 21, 1961, the University of Tulsa football team ate a pregame meal that consisted of a breakfast steak, orange juice, hash browns, toast and bacon.

TU would lose that game, 23-12 against then-North Texas State.

Just days before one of the 1981 Memorial High School football playoff games, parents were told at the booster club meeting that the players should eat pancakes as the last meal before the game.

Memorial would lose its second round game that year.

Did what each team ate have that much to do with the outcome? Probably not.

However, the study of nutrition has come a long way. It is now a science that studies the relationships between metabolism, energy consumption, carbohydrates and water.
